Johor Bahru is a perfect short getaway from Singapore when you just want an affordable and nice relaxing escape from work or anything else!
The current exchange rate for us Singaporeans also makes it great to go shopping in Malaysia.
I've been over the borders quite a number of times now since i discovered how easy and convenient it is to just take a bus over and decided to churn out this hotel guide as i have stayed in a number of hotels there to help you with deciding your perfect resting place there!
Theses are the hotels that i have stayed in thus far
1) Holiday Villa Hotel Johor Bahru City Centre
Top 3 great things:
infinity pool
free wifi
free breakfast
This hotel has to be definitely my favourite!! When i stayed there, it was only 2 weeks into their opening and i got the room through Agoda at a good $98 sgd. This amount also came with breakfast for two which is always nice. The hotel was new and thus a little dusty but it was just really nice. What made me want to book this hotel actually was the infinity pool as i'm a great sucker for it. The pool did not disappoint it was exactly like a mini MBS and with the price that i paid, it was definitely worth it. The location of the hotel was also great as it was next to KSL mall and there where plenty of food to eat around the area. The room was nice, clean and pretty spacious as well they even have a little platform reading area when you open the curtains right next to the window. A little down side was that the tv only had all the basic Singapore TV channels? not even the Malaysia channels which was quite a surprise to us (maybe they were really trying to cater to Singaporeans?haha.) and they did not have a bath tub. The room provided all the basic necessities just as toothbrush, soap shampoo towels and all that. We had a really nice comfortable night there and the breakfast buffet was not bad as well. They provided the typical American breakfast with toast, beans, eggs, beef, cheese and some Asian cuisine as well. It was pretty decent not top notch but it was alright since it came with the room and the view was amazing as well. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who loves infinity pools and even if you are not planing to swim, the hotel itself is pretty great as well.
2) Thistle Hotel Johor Bahru
Top 2 great things:
free wifi
bath tub
We stayed at Thistle Hotel quite awhile ago and paid $70-80 sgd at that point of time. However base on my observation of the price on Agoda, it seems to be at the $100+ range now. We arrived pretty late at the hotel as it was one of those spontaneous 'tmr i have no sch lets go JB for a stayca' kind of day so we did not have the time to check the pool out. I was quite excited to stay there as the reviews were pretty great and it seems to be pretty new as well. The location was a little far off from the usual KSL or City Square area and we had to cab out to the mall even though it was just a short drive. The hotel was nice and the rooms were clean and comfortable, exactly like the picture. They provided the basic hotel amenities and to my surprise there was even a bath tub. The next morning we paid for the hotel breakfast for about $40 ringgit if i am not wrong and it was also mediocre with the usual typical American breakfast.Would recommend this to those who want a comfortable stay in a nice hotel and don't mind if the location is a little far from the usual malls such as KSL.
3)Bello Hotel Johor Bahru
Top 2 great things:
Affordable price
free wifi
The real reason why we chose Bello Hotel in the first place was because of it's price. We usually paid $50-$65 sgd for the room per night and i thought it was really affordable for a spontaneous getaway. Bello Hotel was a small boutique hotel that was located at the area right beside City Square. We did not have to take a cab after crossing the immigration and it takes about 10-15 mins to get there if you know exactly where it is. There was quite a number of coffee shops right opposite the hotel and City Square was within walking distance. The room was small but not to the extend where it was super cramp and it was comfortable and clean. I honestly do like the place as the hotel itself is pretty new and the rooms are nicely furbished with the plus point of it being so much more affordable than the other hotels of similar standards. Would definitely recommend it to those who need a short and affordable staycation that is right around the area of City Square and the customs.
i still have these hotels to review in part 2! so stay tuned and leave some comments or questions!
KSL
Grand paragon
Double tree Hilton
